Reynald Ricard

Owner/Colorist

Reynald began his career in Paris at the age of 18 where he worked at famed salons Maniatis, Frank Provost and Jacques Dessange. After seven years, and opening salons for Dessange in Paris, Casa Blanca, Morocco, Palm Beach and Miami, Ricard left for New York City and a position at Frederic Fekkai. Along the way, he’s glammed up the locks of celebs like Carla Bruni, Anne Heche, Sting, and Claudia Schiffer.

Why did you become a colorist?
When I was a child, my mother’s friend owned a salon and I loved the smell, the ambience. I loved to see beautiful people taking care of themselves, and my mom was so happy every time she went!

What do you like about coloring hair?
I work in the fashion industry, but fashion comes and goes. When I color, I look for timeless beauty and am more concerned with a look that will flatter no matter what. My grandmother always said what’s most important is nice hair and good shoes. I say if you have a good style and color, you can wear jeans and a t-shirt and look glamorous!

You specialize in the balayage coloring technique. Why do you prefer it?
I paint, so coloring hair is a very artistic process for me—I have a photo image in my head, then create lines to reproduce this image. The balayage technique is fun, it’s quick to apply and grows out well.

What makes Red Market Salon unique?
The quality of the work. We have very high expectations, and never leave a client if she’s unhappy. The late hour means we’re not crazy and stressed about time, and neither are our clients.

How do you spend your free time?
Well, I love to learn, so I read all the time. I visit museums, shop, paint and stay active—I love to run marathons and play golf. I live in Union Square with two Great Danes, and this area is cool, young and in the middle of everything. It keeps me young!
